About plant names...

The cucumber tree is a North American native, named for its fruits' resemblance to cucumbers.

Identification: Trees are 50-80′ (15-24 m) tall, with light gray-brown flaky bark. Leaves are yellowish-green, smooth-edged, alternate, roughly oval in shape, 4½-10″ (12-25 cm) × 2-4½″ (6-12 cm). Some leaves taper to a point at both ends (acuminate), while others are more heart-shaped. The flowers are inconspicuous, yellowish-green in color, 2½-3″ (6.3-7.6 cm) around. Fruits look like a cucumber, 2-3″ (6-8 cm) long and 1½″ (4 cm) around, green maturing to dark red.
