Allium giganteum Regel Ornamental onion
Giant onions are native to central Asia. They reach 3-5' (91-152 cm) in height, and about 18" (45 cm) in width. It has large bulbs, 2-3" (5-7.6 cm) in diameter. It is popular with gardeners for its stunning spherical purple-pink flowerheads three or four inches in diameter. Each flowerhead is supported by a smooth, cylindrical, unbranched stem. Identification: The flowerheads are unmistakable, white or pink, made up of hundreds of tiny, six-petaled flowers. If the plant is not in bloom, the leaves form a basal rosette looking a bit like thick blades of grass up to 18" (45 cm) long. Online References:
