Pine barren goldenheather is native to eastern North America. It is also called pine-barren false heather, because it resembles real heather.
Plants: Though rarely more than 6″ (15 cm) inches high, this is technically a shrub, a woody perennial. It forms multiply branched mats up to 3′ (1 m) across.
Leaves: Gray-green, awl-shaped, 1/16–¼″ (2–7 mm) long. Leaves overlap, but do not lie against the stem.
Flowers: Creates masses of yellow flowers ¼″ (8.5 mm) across on upper parts of branches. Each flower has five petals and three sepals. They appear from late May to July.
Fruits: Cylindrical capsules 1/16–¼ ⨉ 1/32″ (2–7 ⨉ 0.5 mm). Each capsule contains one or two seeds ~1/32″ (0.6–0.7 mm) long. Capsules appear from late June to August.
Habitats: Dry, sandy, open, disturbed habitats, including cliffs, balds, grassland, and pine barrens.
