After German naturalist and physician Johann Christian Daniel Von Schreber (1739-1810). He studied medicine, theology and natural history at Halle in Germany and Uppsala in Sweden under Carl von Linné and received his MD degree in 1760. He became a practicing physician and then after studying botany in Berlin a professor of medicine and botany at Erlangen in Bavaria in 1770. He was made director of the Erlangen botanical garden in 1773 and became professor of natural history in 1776. He was the editor of the 8th edition of Linné’s Genera Plantarum (17891791), was chosen as a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1787, and knighted in 1791
